Lightscape Sequence – The Journey of the Red Ox
Lightscape – a term that describes our lit, lived-in environment, created and influenced by natural and artificial light – is a concept that implies a collective cultural dimension that affects the diversity of our experience. The perception of light, and thus also of colour, carries experience-based, emergent meanings and narratives. Humans are an inherent part of lightscapes.
In the site-specific installation Lightscape Sequence ‘The Journey of the Red Ox’ designed for the Kunsthalle, visitors are invited to become part of the metaphorical light narrative as they walk through the building. The play of colour and shadow in the stairwell illuminates in the narrative various themes such as transformation, discovery, and inner strength. The sequence depicts how the curiosity-driven red ox travels from its familiar idyllic location, experiencing challenges and encountering other beings along the way. In doing so, it undergoes a personal development. After many adventures, the Red Ox returns with fresh perspectives and inspiring ideas. Visitors can view the projected story as an installation and walk through it, learning so much more about the location and perhaps about themselves than they would otherwise know.
